Differences and costs

Many people in Canada or about to arrive in the country are connected with what are the French tests to do an immigration procedure, especially the TEF, either because it is required for visa, college entrance, because they are about to apply for citizenship, etc., but not all of them know the differences in terms of objectives, content approaches and even costs! That's why I thought it would be interesting to create a blog about the TEF and its different versions so that you know which one to take.

The TEF and its different versions

The TEF (Test d'évaluation du français) is the official test that evaluates linguistic skills in French, and the main difference between its versions lies in the scope of the tests, i.e. their specific use in one or another context, depending on their migratory purpose. Let us look at the characteristics of each one.

TEF Canada Immigration

• Objective: this test is intended to certify the French language proficiency of applicants wishing to immigrate to Canada, and is required for federal and provincial immigration processes.
• Content: Covers the four (4) areas of the language: oral comprehension, written comprehension, oral expression and written expression.
• Cost: approx, 390 Canadian dollars (CAD), depending on the center where the test is taken.

TEF Canada Citoyenneté 

• Objective: To assess the level of French of applicants for Canadian citizenship.
• Content: consists of only two (2) areas, oral comprehension and oral expression.
• Cost: 200 CAD.

TEF Études

• Objective: To assess French language skills for all foreign students wishing to enter college or university in Canada.
• Content: Covers written and oral skills in French. This version for students consists of oral and written comprehension, lexis and structure, which in French is called grammaire y vocabulaire.
• Cost: 380 CAD.

TEF Naturalisation 

• Objective: To assess skills in French for French or Swiss nationality.
• Content: covers oral and written comprehension and oral and written expression. oral and written comprehension and oral and written expression.
• Cost: 380 CAD.

In short, the TEF (Test d'évaluation du français) is an international reference test very much in demand by people who are doing an immigration procedure for Canada and need to measure their level of knowledge and skills in French, however, I recommend that you always remember to take one or the other test according to your immigration objective and not because you find a more reasonable price or you prefer to demonstrate that you have better skills in a specific area.

I also recommend that you check the prices of each exam at the authorized center where you plan to take the exam.
