When it comes to salaries, speaking more than one language makes a difference in the world of work, and if we combine employment opportunities with migration, even more so. Bilingual Latinos are much more competitive for a good job in the foreign market and, in addition, they are better paid.

Whether it's English or French, earning more money is always a good goal. How to achieve it? Read with me this blog topic, in which I include a learning plan for those who want to speak another language in addition to Spanish. Let's get started!

Salaries and opportunities for bilinguals in Latin America

In Latin America, speaking more than one language is one of the greatest advantages you can have in the workplace, especially if you speak English or French, since these two languages allow you to apply for well-paid positions that require specific language skills in relatively nearby countries, such as Canada or the United States, at least without having to change continents and go to Australia or France, for example.

Spanish speakers who are fluent in English and/or French have access to better pay than those who only speak Spanish. In fact, the intermediate level allows them to negotiate with their employers a higher salary, as this entails the possibility of expanding the company's services and reaching other productive sectors.

The highest salaries are reserved for bilingual workers.

Studies in Latin America show that there is a wage gap determined by the level of education and language in the countries of the Latin American and North American region, that is, that there is a wage gap between bilingual workers and those who only speak Spanish as their mother tongue. Hence, bilingualism can influence the supply of better salaries because it translates into expansion and economic growth for the working world.

In Latin America, geographical proximity to French-speaking countries (such as Canada) or English-speaking countries (such as the United States) may favor access to jobs, remote or on-site, with contracts that provide interesting salary income for your specific language skills. In Canada, salaries vary by province and industry, but in general, proficiency in more than one language can increase your salary prospects.

To give you an idea, the general minimum wage in the province of Ontario (where both English and French are spoken) is 17.20 CAD 17.20 CAD per hour, but the higher the level of education and language skills, the higher the wage. In Latin American countries, on an estimated average, an hour of work is paid at 5 US dollars, a quite significant difference and one that leads us to reflect on the subject.

Canada: an attractive destination for bilingual Spanish speakers

The Canadian government highly values the linguistic diversity of its native and immigrant population, the best part is that it offers very attractive opportunities for those who speak English and/or French. Here are a few reasons why Canada is a high-paying job destination for bilingual foreigners to choose:

  • Offers several immigration programs

Canada has specific programs for bilingual foreigners, such as the Mobilité Francophone program, which seeks to encourage French-speaking immigration to Canada outside Quebec. There are also other routes, such as Express Entry and its programs. All take into account the level of a second language and offer employment benefits for qualified bilingual foreigners.
