To speak any language, it is necessary to have enough vocabulary, to memorize it and to respect the rules of grammar. This is the only way to "think in another language" and speak it naturally. Of course, all this is a time-consuming process, It requires a lot of study, daily practice, etc., but once advanced, the result is incredible because we begin to think in another language!
Today I will explain how to think in another language and speak it naturally and fluently, without having to translate word for word. Read to the end and take note of this valuable information - let's get started!
When do you start thinking in another language?
The process of thinking in another language does not happen immediately. Some achieve it in monthsmonths, others in yearsHowever, the important thing is perseverance. The reason? The brain needs time to assimilate the meaning of each word and its correct combination with precise phrases and expressions, in addition to being consistent with the context in which it is being spoken, among other aspects.
In reality, this process usually begins when the student reaches an intermediate level. intermediate levelThis is when he or she understands and participates in extended conversations with ease, both in everyday and professional situations.
Once the student feels comfortable presenting detailed information on important topics, using simple and complex structures, or if he/she can express feelings and opinions clearly, without the need to translate word for word, he/she is considered to have started thinking in another language.
But what if the student is at a pre-intermediate level and feels that he is already thinking about another language? What if the student is at a pre-intermediate level and feels that he/she is already thinking about another language, does that mean that the process has started earlier than expected? Yes! Each student progresses at a different pace and the levels only delimit the content of the programs they can already see. Some learn much faster than others because they are more surrounded by the language and have access to the orality of native or bilingual speakers, which activates the ability to listen and produce fluent speech.
Signs that you are thinking in another language
How to tell if you are thinking in another language:
- First sign: Forms sentences without mental translation.
- Second sign: understands conversations effortlessly.
- Third sign: Responds naturally and fluently.
If you haven't reached this point yet, don't worry! Every advance counts, and over time, language will become part of your thinking.
What factors influence the process of thinking in another language?
Factors influencing this process include:
- Immersion in the language
As mentioned before, being surrounded by the language accelerates the ability to speak without having to mentally translate each word. By relating terms, expressions, even common gestures on a topic, from other speakers who do it on a daily basis, it is possible to emulate the words associated with a given situation and this leads to spontaneous oral reproduction.
- Constant practice
To achieve this brain state, you need to read, write, listen and try to speak as much as you can in the language you are learning and do it every day without relying on translation.
- Self-confidence
At the beginning, many students present natural doubts that end up generating distrust in their ability to learn, others, on the other hand, know that it is normal and move on without worrying about mistakes, rather they focus their attention on the fact of communicating. Therein lies the key! Self-confidence is fundamental to teach the brain about spontaneous and fluent second language acquisition. After all, we all make mistakes sometimes, even when speaking our native language.
