How to learn English without giving up the challenge
Dec 02, 2024Written by Gabriela Estrada
How many times have you tried to learn English and quit halfway through? Many people abandon this challenge due to impatience or lack of motivation, which ends up wasting time, money, illusions and opportunities to grow. Sound familiar? The good news is that there are effective ways to learn English without giving up.
This is the topic I would like to share today in our Planet Immiland blog. Here I will talk about some cognitive aspects and mental blocks that affect those who seek to learn English and I will share with you an effective way to start from scratch and create a foundation that will propel you to higher levels. What does it all look like? Read with me to the end and find out step by step. Let's get started.
Confidence is essential for speaking English
What happens when an English learner abandons the challenge before they have even created a foundation for English is that they lacked the support to trust themselves and probably their tutor. Wanting to be bilingual in two or three months sounds great and can be achieved, but at a basic level, which serves as a foundation to propel you from there to a second level, and so on. The secret is to build a good linguistic foundation and always have the support of a skilled person.
¡Aearning English works well when we set an intention and an objective! This entails setting short-term and achievable goals, for example: in two months of language immersion, the fixed goal will be to acquire basic communication skills such as telling the time, asking someone's name and date of birth, giving directions or short instructions, handling some simple social conversations, and not getting ahead of yourself or wanting to move to the next level without having completed the goal first. Otherwise, you will lose the enjoyment of what you have learned in English and all the vocabulary and its structure will cost more.
My recommendation is that you first define your objective and create your own style of mastering the language.
Why is it so hard for some people to learn English?
Sometimes, the decision to learn through a traditional teaching method leads some people to choose an ineffective path, either because the strategy is impractical, very boring or because it is far from their personal interests. That is when we realize that it is not that it is difficult to learn another language, it is that the method has not been the right one or does not take us where we want to go.
Lack of objective
If there is no clear objective from the start, it will be difficult to define the language skill most needed as a starting point. For example, if a person needs to strengthen his or her English for a job in the area of call centerFor example, if a person needs to strengthen his or her English for a call center job, it may be most useful to strengthen listening and speaking. This does not mean that grammar will be forgotten, but it does mean that the learner will find in the process what he/she needs to put it into practice.
At Planeta Immiland, we always recommend working with teaching methods focused on your specific objectives or requirements so that the other skills are acquired more easily.
Lack of exposure to English
Auditory exposure is fundamental to learning any language! How can a person acquire new vocabulary if he or she does not listen to an English speaker? These cases are comparable to that of children who speak English as a second language, they start listening to English long before they speak it, and so they are able to incorporate it easily.
My best recommendation for those who have abandoned the challenge is to listen to as much English as you can, even if you don't understand it at first. As we have stated in other topics, human beings learn by imitation, so have no doubt that the new vocabulary will eventually settle into your cognitive system.
How to get the cognitive system to incorporate English as a second language?
Installing English in your brain is the solution, just as it happens with other cognitive processes, such as handling new software, studying law, taking a diploma course, etc., because you will use them for life. The secret is to accept that in a certain period of time, two or three months, your brain will be at the service of a different language and you have to be in tune with it; how, by listening to TV programs, music, podcasts and movies in English, even if you don't understand anything, also by joining a conversation club. (Then you can read this interesting blog about The usefulness of the conversation club in the first English courses.).
As the days go by, there will be positive changes. But it's not all there, you also have to put in the effort and explore interactive and even guided forms of study. Learning English alone or on your own is more difficult. However, friends, co-workers and even people from other parts of the world can help, and conversation clubs are often a great support!
