Read with me to the end and apply the strategies month by month and you will see wonderful results. Let's get started!
June
One month to adapt the hearing
June is the ideal month to take to the streets and start the famous language immersion. An important tip is not to put pressure on yourself by wanting to understand 100% everything that is spoken around you; the goal in June is to get used to listening y produce sounds in English. Strategies this month are as follows:
- Think of "understanding basic conversations" o "ordering food without problems"but not "being fluent," not yet.
- Create a music playlist of Canadian or English-speaking artists that you like. As you listen to them, pay attention to the lyrics.
- Search for podcasts on topics that interest you (travel, comedy, news) or tune in to local radio stations. Don't worry if you don't understand everything; the goal is to get you used to the rhythm and intonation.
- Watch your favorite series in English with English subtitles. If you already know them, it will be easier to follow the plot.
- Try to use simple English phrases in your daily conversationswhen buying a coffee, asking for directions, greeting a neighbor. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; that's how you learn!
- Focus on basic everyday vocabulary: greetings, numbers, addresses, phrases for shopping and ordering food.Greetings, numbers, addresses, phrases for shopping and ordering food.
July
Perfect for activating orality and starting to connect.
Now that your ear is more attuned, start speaking more actively and look for ways to connect with other English speakers. For example:
- Search language exchange groups in your city (they are often organized in cafes or libraries). I assure you that they are the most suitable and offer a relaxed atmosphere.
- Volunteer where you can meet people and practice English in real-life situations.
- Go to festivals, farmers' markets or community events, and don't think too much about initiating short conversations with people.Don't think too much about initiating short conversations with people. Remember that this month is for activating orality, so anything you can talk about will be helpful in moving forward.
- Practice pronunciation! One way is to imitate the way native speakers pronounce words and phrases. If you can record yourself, all the better, so you will have a reference when you listen to them again.
- Use applications that provide feedback on your pronunciation.
- Write a small journal in English each day. Even short sentences can help you organize your thoughts in the language.
- Incorporate vocabulary of interest to youwhether it is music, sports, hobbies, etc. For example, if you like to go swimming, then learn words such as goggles (special goggles to protect your eyes from the water).
August
Start gaining confidence
This month is to consolidate what you have learned and start feeling more comfortable and confident in your interactions. How? Easy!
- Read a lot! Look for books or articles in English that interest you and are adapted to your level. Underline new words and look up the meaning.
- Challenge yourself to more complex conversations! The months of adaptation and activation are over, now it's time to talk at greater length - dare to give your opinion on a topic and ask more elaborate questions!
- Take some time to identify your weaknesses. For example, verb tenses that are more difficult for you than others, words you need to pronounce better, etc., and correct as necessary.
- Have fun doing activities that you enjoy, but that lead you to use English naturally! It could be taking a cooking class, going to a concert, going dancing, etc.
September

- Review the vocabulary and grammatical structures with a summary of the summary of what you have struggled with and what you have mastered.
- Evaluate your progress and ask yourself if you can now understand more or if you feel more confident speaking.
- Even if the summer is over, don't stop listening to music, watching TV series and reading in English..
- Plan your next steps and think about think about how you want to continue to improve. Ask yourself if you you need a course or if you want to focus on a specific area such as English for work or IELTS English for work or IELTS preparation.
The Canadian summer is one of the most active seasons for speaking English, but in October life goes on and you need to gain fluency in the language, so it is time to think about how to take advantage of the fall to achieve it.
