French B2 enters Express Entry special selection pool
Jul 24, 2024Written by Eddy Ramírez
The key to living in Canada is French!
Undoubtedly, Canada's immigration system is quite receptive to foreigners from all over the world because the government has a wide variety of routes, programs, streams and pilots that seek to attract the best candidates to enter what is known as a pool (pool) of selection within the system of rapid arrival to Canada: the Express Entry. Under this option, in the special categories, people who are proficient in French at a B2 level and above can enter the selection pool.
Why French specifically and not English? This question is quite common among Immiland users and clients, and the reason is that the IRCC has a category called French language proficiency and, when the Canadian government sees the need, it launches its Express Entry rounds according to the lack of personnel to fill jobs in different provinces (except Quebec) and specific industries in the region, thus helping to make the selection process a strategic and orderly one.
As shown on this official IRCC websiteFrench is a special category, in fact, it is the first in the list of the 6 current categories.
- Proficiency in French
- Healthcare occupations
- Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations
- Commercial occupations
- Occupations in the transportation sector
- Agricultural and agri-food occupations.
How many points do I get for speaking French B2?
Express Entry candidates for the French special category who qualify for this option will receive priority entry into a special selection pool, as the points to be invited for permanent residency are almost 150 less than the general category.
To better understand this aspect, I will present a summary of the required scores in both general and special drawings this 2024.
- February 1st - French level draw: CRS minimum: 365
- February 14 - Health care lottery: CRS minimum: 422
- February 16 - Agriculture and Agri-Food Lottery: CRS minimum: 437
- February 29th - French level draw: CRS minimum: 336
- March 13 - Transportation Drawing: CRS minimum: 430
- March 26th - French level draw: CRS minimum: 338
- April 11 - Science, Technology, Engineering, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Sweepstakes: CRS minimum: 491
As you can see, the lowest score has been in the French category, so Express Entry candidates who fail to qualify for the general draws have a better chance of entering through this category.
As a language school for Canada, we know very well that learning French takes time and requires accompaniment and planning, but we are also convinced of the success of those who decide to break the language barrier and acquire French language skills.

Who can apply for this program?
To apply for the special category of French proficiency for Express Entry, you must take into account the following:
- People with any profession can apply. Even regulated careers in Canada, for example, doctors and lawyers.
- People who are studying or working in Canada can apply if they have a minimum French level of B2.
- Persons who have never traveled to Canada may also apply.
Features of this program
- Although this plan applies for French, it is NOT for living in the French-speaking province of Quebec. So people who want to live in this province should check the specific plans of the Quebec government. Quebec government.
- If the candidate applies as a couple, the latter's profile will also be evaluated, so it MUST BE AS GOOD as that of the main applicant.
I hope you find this information useful and can evaluate it. Of course, achieving an intermediate B2 level in both languages can take many months, but that does not make it impossible. On the contrary, people who thought it would be difficult are now speaking the language, even living in Canada and functioning as French speakers at work and university.
