• Participate in conversation clubs

Have you ever been on a social site where everyone talks entertainingly about common topics? That's what conversation clubs are like in any language. Among Hispanics, it's typical to talk about an English conversation club, for example.

This is a place where a number of people get together to have a relaxed chat while they are learning. Here, they can practice speaking, listening and comprehension in a fun way without the stress of making mistakes. This extracurricular activity allows them to make friends and expand their minds to a new and engaging cultural north while improving their fluency and confidence in speaking. 

• Conduct pronunciation workshops

A pronunciation workshop is an interactive session designed to teach specific skills on how to articulate and produce the sounds of the new language so that it sounds more natural when spoken. These spaces are very effective for students who are in the process of laying the foundations of the language and want to acquire the proper intonation, rhythm and accent to pronounce well and be able to speak without embarrassment or fear in front of others.

Unlike traditional classes, workshops tend to be more hands-on and participatory, which makes them very engaging and helps students apply what they learn in real time. 

• Incorporate language immersion sessions

These sessions offer a complete language experience through general activities, such as cooking typical dishes, watching movies in English, French or the language you are learning, participating in corporate or social meetings, etc. Being part of an immersive session connects the student with real-life resources and situations, which are the same ones they will encounter from that moment on with the newly acquired language, so they will know how to handle conversations of all kinds as they engage with the linguistic environment.

Recommendations for making the most of extracurricular activities when learning a language

• Set clear goals

Define specific objectives for each extracurricular activity. For example, in a conversation club, you might aim to learn and use five new words or expressions each session.

• Maintain daily learning

Keep track of your progress and reflect on what you have learned in each activity. This will help you identify areas for improvement and keep you motivated.

• Seek feedback

Ask your classmates and teachers for feedback on your performance in the activities. Constructive feedback is essential to improve your language skills.
