Canadian Expressions in English: Speak Like a Native
Jul 01, 2024Written by Gabriela Estrada
Speaking English like a native Canadian takes time, but it doesn't take a lifetime to achieve either. It is enough to read, listen and pronounce their words, phrases and everyday expressions during the constant study of the language to understand them because, when you least imagine it, you will have a colloquial and formal lexicon on file that you can use during your conversations to feel increasingly integrated into Canadian society.
Today, from our language school, Planeta Immiland, we wanted to share a compendium of typical linguistic constructions of Canadians so that they acquire the style of English that a native of any English-speaking province, such as British Columbia, for example, or a Canadian boss would use during the job interview in Ontario. In this way, we seek to bring you closer to the English of Canada because we know that mastering the essence of this language will give you greater fluency and security to express yourself and will open the doors to work, study and personal growth and, more importantly, to the citizenship you long for. Start!

English phrases to cheer up a child
To express approval, you can use the word:
- Atta boy. This is a colloquial way of saying: That's the boy or that's a boy.
In Canada, it is used to congratulate or encourage someone, usually a child, for having made a good effort or a good job, it is also a way of saying very good! or congratulations!
Say something more communicative than a simple "yes"
English in Canada also has its richness of vocabulary and expressions, just as our Spanish language has, so stop simply saying "yes" every time you are asked something, there are other expressions that denote more commitment to conversation, for example:
