Don't say, "My English is bad..." Say: "I am learning."

Learning English not only depends on knowing grammar rules and memorizing vocabulary, it also has a lot to do with how we describe our progress.

When an English learner says, "I don't think I can understand what a native speaker says" or "I always mispronounce a word," he or she is reinforcing mental barriers that limit his or her progress. But to stop this from taking hold, you can apply a wonderful tool called Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), which helps to erase that language and reprogram your mind in a positive way.

Today I will explain how NLP generates a positive mindset that stimulates the brain and prepares it to acquire English with confidence and self-confidence. Let's get started!

What is Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)?

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological approach that studies how language, thoughts and behavioral patterns affect the way we interact with the world and achieve our goals. It is based on the idea that the words and thoughts we use shape our emotions and actions, and by consciously modifying them we can reprogram our brain to achieve better performance in various areas, such as learning, relationships or personal development.

How does NLP work when applied to English language learning?

When we apply NLP to learning English, we begin to overcome mental and emotional barriers that limit our progress. Let's look at these two statements:

  1. "Sorry, my English is bad..."
  2. "I'm in the process of learning."

From the perspective of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)these two phrases have very different impacts on the mind and the way we approach learning.

"Sorry, my English is bad..."

This phrase reinforces a limiting belief. By saying it, the learner is asserting that his or her level of English is low, insufficient or negative and is apologizing for it, which reinforces an attitude of insecurity. In NLP terms, this type of language generates an emotional state of shame or frustration, which can sabotage his confidence and hinder his willingness to learn. Your mind assumes this belief as fact and positions itself in a static place, where there is no growth.

Let's look at the following sentence.

"I am in the process of learning."

This phrase is optimistic and framed as progress. It conveys that you are working to improve and that learning is a path under construction. From the NLP perspective, this type of affirmation generates a state of mind of empowerment, which opens the mind to new experiences and fosters confidence in your ability to learn.

By choosing words that emphasize progress and improvement, the English learner reprograms his mind to focus on the positive and places himself in a position of continuous growth. This change not only affects their mindset, but also their attitude towards learning: they feel more motivated, open to challenges and less afraid of making mistakes.

In short, replacing a pejorative phrase with an optimistic one such as "I am in the process of learning" transforms the way the English learner perceives his or her abilities and establishes a mental environment more conducive to learning. Every word you choose creates an impact, and NLP invites you to be aware of that power to unlock your next level.

Phrases to strengthen your linguistic mindset

When talking about your English, apply these positive affirmations:

  1. "Every word I learn brings me closer to mastering English."
  2. "Pronouncing correctly is a matter of practice, and I'm getting better every day."
  3. "It doesn't matter if I make mistakes, I'm moving forward."
  4. "Although I don't understand English movies now, I will soon be able to enjoy every dialogue."
  5. "I am confident in my ability to learn and communicate in English."
