Reading in another language for language proficiency
From the time we are children and open our first book, we begin a journey through the world through words. Reading is not only a source of knowledge and entertainment, it is also the basis for the acquisition of a language, whether it is our mother tongue or a second language.
Reading in another language involves recognizing words and understanding their meaning in context. This process is fantastic because our brains actively work to associate words with images, sounds and meanings and this is how vocabulary is expanded, reading comprehension is improved and a good familiarity with grammatical structures is created.Â
Books in English or French, for example, allow students to connect with authentic expressions, improve their fluency and develop skills that will be useful in study, work and everyday life. That's why we are so pleased to do this Book Day special!Â
Let's take a look at some recommended books to expand vocabulary in another language.
Books in English and French to expand vocabulary and reading comprehension.
To improve your vocabulary in English and French, you can start with easy-to-read books. Here are some titles recommended for their masterful content and practicality in learning:
- In English: Jonathan Livingston Seagull (Juan Salvador Gaviota) by Richard Bach → A book with clear language and inspiring messages.
- In French: Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry → A story with simple and profound sentences.
Both books are ideal for beginners, accessible language and allow you to learn new words in context.
If your level is intermediate to advanced, reading will continue to be your best ally in building an increasingly large and cultured vocabulary. The titles you can read are:
- In English: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon. → A novel with clear and accessible language. In 2005, it won the award for Best First Book for Young Readers.
- In French: L'Étranger - Albert Camus → A classic with a direct and accessible style for intermediate level students. The foreigner Is often associated with the philosophy of the absurd, psychology, and existentialism.
