Traveling to Canada as a couple: a plan for two that includes the language
Apr 15, 2024Written by Eddy Ramírez
It is very common to see couples from different parts of the world arriving together in Canada to fulfill their dream of living in this attractive country. The experience of getting to know a new culture and the expectation of a radical change in the quality of life makes them happier than they expected, but after the first three months something changes and it is no longer so much fun because it was not a tourist trip, it was a trip in which the main applicant went to study or work and his partner accompanied him, but he did not make his own life plan, he could not get a job in Canada, he did not have a career to study and even worse he did not even learn one of the two official languages of the country, English and French, unlike his partner who knew what he wanted and has already been well inserted into the Canadian system. What do you think happens in these cases, in this article of Immiland, we tell you.
"I'm going back to my home country, this was not my life plan."
One of the reasons why the partner of the principal applicant, who can be a student or an international skilled worker, returns to her country of origin is because she did not travel to Canada with a defined plan, then she starts to feel frustrated because she cannot get a job, she cannot study because she did not make previous arrangements to be accepted in the university or college, she starts to see that her partner already has friends and as a consequence she starts to feel lonely and depressed because she does not even speak the same language as the others.... then, it is when she realizes that this was not her life project, it was her partner's, and she goes back to her country, the relationship breaks up or the principal stops his plans and goes back too and the whole project falls down.
Cases like these are seen every day in immigration, but they occur because the couple did not plan a travel project according to the life of both and, as we always say in Immiland, to travel to Canada as a temporary or permanent resident couple, they must know the plan that will bring them successfully to the country. The best thing to do when you are not clear about which immigration plan to choose is to consult your situation with an advisor regulated by the Canadian government. Immiland has a team of CICC regulated advisors who can assist you. Learn more here.
Guide to staying together with your partner living in Canada
In order to avoid the love breakup behind the Canadian dream or that both of you decide to return to your country of origin without completing the plan you had, also, based on my experience as a consultant, I have created this compilation of recommendations that will guide you through a path of important and mandatory decisions that you must make from the very moment you decide to accompany your loved one to study or work in Canada. Please read each one carefully:
- The first decision is to start a real team plan, you and your partner must prepare together and bet on the same educational, work and/or language profile.
- Both must be fluent in English and/or French. If the principal speaks English and French, you must speak at least one of the two languages well. In that case, you need to set aside some quality time to study English or French. You can do it self-taught, by taking classroom or online courses, however you choose to learn will be fine, but learn to speak English or French. Remember that traveling to Canada as a couple is a plan for two that includes language.
In our language school, Planeta Immiland, we have several courses adapted to your level and we manage full time online classes from the comfort of your home. We also have a conversation club that will gradually introduce you to the language with interactive strategies from our bilingual and native teachers, who will be live guiding your learning process. - Study a professional career in your home country. If the principal applicant has a bachelor's degree and you have a bachelor's degree, then start looking for careers that interest you to level up. Speaking English or French and being professionals in your home country gives you a great advantage when traveling together to Canada, but there is another important recommendation.
- Acquire work experience in your country of origin, this way it will be easier for you to find a job offer in Canada. There are many programs that allow you to emigrate by way of economic mobility and skilled labor is needed, professionals in critical areas of the country with vacancies that may be for you, beautiful provinces that require immigrants willing to work and that, above all, give benefits to qualify for permanent residence, but the Canadian government attracts and retains the best, therefore, you as a companion of the principal applicant must study and profile yourself as a foreigner as competent and interesting as your partner.
This is how both of you will be able to stay together in Canada and enjoy as a couple with your children the true meaning of changing to a better quality life on equal terms. Everything starts with a good decision and studying the language of the country that will welcome you to live for many years is the key.
