How a Pathway Program Works

I recently met a student who was visibly worried because he felt that his language skills would affect his admission to college. He had almost everything ready to travel and fulfill his dream of studying at LaSalle College, but suddenly he panicked and started asking a lot of questions:

"Do I need to take the IELTS?"

"Can I apply to college before I finish my English course?"

"What does a conditional admission letter mean?"

"Does the Pathway really replace an international exam?"

If, like him, you're worried that your language skills might affect your admission to college or university, don’t worry—you’re not alone. In fact, these are precisely the most common questions we receive during our educational counseling sessions at Planeta Immiland Education.

The good news is that there’s an alternative designed specifically to help you improve and bring your English up to until you reach the standard required by Canadian institutions: the Pathway Programs.

In this blog post, I'll explain how they work, what their benefits are, and what steps you need to take to use them as the ideal bridge to your studies in Canada.

First things first…

What is a Pathway Program?

A Pathway Program is an academic preparation program in English (or French, as the case may be) designed to help you reach the language proficiency level required by certain colleges and universities.

Upon successfully completing the program and meeting the academic requirements set by the institution, you will be able to demonstrate your language proficiency without having to take an international exam such as the IELTS or TOEFL, provided that the college or university accepts this method of admission.

It is important to keep in mind that this applies only to educational institutions that have an agreement with the Pathway provider.

NOTE: In the case of our student, he will be attending LaSalle College next summer. LaSalle College is a private postsecondary institution with a campus in Montreal and programs in Vancouver as well, and it is a partner of our academy.

This partnership was a great relief to him, knowing that his language proficiency would meet the requirements of the college. 

How does the process work?

To better understand this program, think of the Pathway Program as a bridge between your current language proficiency and your academic program in Canada.

Step 1. Decide what you want to study

Before starting the Pathway, we recommend that you answer these questions:

• What major do I want to pursue?
• Which city would I like to live in?
• Which college or university offers that program?

This decision is very important because each institution may have different requirements.

Step 2. Check to see if there is a Pathway agreement

Once the academic program has been chosen, my team and I review whether that college or university has a partnership with our language program.

At Planeta Immiland Education, we have partnerships with various Canadian institutions, which allows many students to use the Pathway Program to fulfill their language requirement.

Step 3. Apply to the college or university

Here's something I'm going to tell you that many people don't know. In fact, it was one of our student's biggest concerns:

You don't have to wait until you finish the English course to start your application! You can submit your application to the college or university while you're studying the language.

IMPORTANT! The Conditional Admission Letter

At this stage, the following will occur: 

If you meet the academic requirements, the institution may issue a Letter of Conditional Admission.

Subject to what? On meeting the language requirement.

In other words, the institution has already approved your admission on an academic basis, but is waiting for you to meet the required English proficiency level.

Step 4. Explore Your Pathway

During the program, you will develop the language skills needed to function in an academic setting, including:

• Reading Comprehension
• Academic Writing
• Listening Comprehension
• Oral Expression
• College Vocabulary
• Critical Thinking and Communication

The goal is for you to arrive ready to study entirely in English.

Step 5. Close the program

Once you have successfully completed the required level (usually Advanced, depending on the agreement and the academic program), the relevant documentation is sent to the institution.

At that point, if you have already met all the other admission requirements, the college or university may remove the and issue your unconditional admission letter.

So… do I not need the IELTS or TOEFL?

This was the question that took me the longest to explain to our student, and it's probably the one we get asked most often.

The answer is: It depends on the college or university.

Many of our partner colleges and partner universities accept the Pathway completion certificate as proof of language proficiency, so it is not necessary to take an international exam such as IELTS or TOEFL for the admissions process.

However, this possibility depends on the agreements currently in effect and the specific requirements of each institution.

That's why it's so important to review your case before you start. Remember that Planeta Immiland's Pathway Program works if the college has a partnership with our academy.

Why is it advisable to choose the college?

Many people start studying English without a clear goal in mind. This lack of clarity means it takes longer to reach a certain level, costs more to master certain topics, and makes it harder to understand the purpose of learning the new language.

To work? To college? Or just to understand what others are saying?

Although learning a language will always be a good investment, when your goal is to to study in Canada , the strategy becomes much more effective.

To ease your concerns about your language proficiency, as I explained to our student, you need to first identify the academic program at the partner institution.

This will allow you to:

• Find out exactly what level of English you'll need.
• Confirm that the Pathway is accepted by that institution.
• Avoid studying levels that aren't necessary.
• Plan your application times more clearly.
