In particular, if you reach the level B2. This can make the difference between staying in the applicant pool and being selected.
Today I will tell you how learning French at the B2 level can can help your score in the Comprehensive Rating System (CRS) and prepare you for permanent residency. Read to the end and discover the benefits of B2 level in Canada - let's get started!
B2 level: a quadruple advantage in Express Entry
The most favorable benefit of the B2 (intermediate) level is the eligibility for the category draws. category lotteries of IRCC for French speakers only (CLB 7+).
Important: please note that the level B2 (NCLC, Niveaux de compƩtence linguistique canadiens) is equivalent to level CLB 7 (Canadian Language Benchmark), and sometimes even CLB 8, in the system used by the Canadian government.
-
Drawings for French speakers
- The advantage: these draws tend to have significantly lower CRS cutoff scores than general draws, thus ensuring an Invitation to Apply (ITA) with an otherwise insufficient score.
-
Provincial Nomination Points (PNP)
Several provinces (such as Ontario y New Brunswick) have exclusive migration routes for French-speakers.
- The super advantage: To be nominated by a province through these streams earns you 600 additional CRS pointswhich virtually guarantees your permanent residency.
-
CRS points bonus (the "extra")
The CLB 7+ level activates the direct bonus on your profile with 25 or 50 points points to the CRS, increasing your ranking ranking.
-
Simplified work permit
Your B2 level gives you access to the Francophone Mobility Program (CLB 5+), allowing you to obtain a work permit without the need for a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which accelerates your arrival and gaining Canadian work experience.
Calculation of CRS points
The CRS system awards non-transferable bonus points to candidates who demonstrate significant proficiency in French. The number of points you earn depends directly on your level of English (the other official language) and your B2 level in French.
Additional points for speaking French (CRS)
Proficiency in French (NCLC 7 or higher) |
English proficiency (CLB) |
Additional bonus points |
NCLC of 7 or higher in all four skills |
CLB of 4 or lower in English (or no English test). |
25 Points |
NCLC of 7 or higher in all four skills |

Difference between obtaining 25 or 50 points
Your B2 level can automatically grant you between 25 and 50 additional points. This bonus is in addition to the points you already earned for your education, work experience and age.
Scoring 25 or 50 points is, statistically, the difference between receiving an ITA and not receiving one.
- In most Express Entry draws, the cut-off scores hover in the range of about 470 or 480.
- If your starting score is 440, for example, the 50 points you get for your B2 in French will raise you to 490 pointsplacing you well above the selection threshold in almost all draws.
The B2 can move your profile from the waiting to the selection!
