The closure of an educational institution can cause concern, uncertainty, and many questions, especially when tuition has already been paid, a program is in progress, travel plans have been made, or an academic or immigration project is underway.

If you are one of the students affected by the ILAC’s closure, we want to start by reminding you of something important: you are not alone in this process.

We know that every situation is different and that your options may depend on factors such as the type of program, whether you are already in Canada, whether your course has already started, the payments you have made, and your academic and immigration status.

That's why, in this blog post, we've compiled some of the resources, contacts, and recommendations shared during the live stream held on Wednesday, September 23, on Immiland Law’s YouTube channel, with the goal of helping you identify the best path forward for your situation.

Live: Guidance for Students Affected by the ILAC Closure

Your school in Canada has closed. What happens to your immigration status now? 

The information presented during the Live stream is intended to serve as general guidance. Since each case may be different, we recommend checking directly with the relevant institutions and authorities before making decisions regarding education, travel, or immigration status.

Resources and Contacts for Affected Students

The options may vary depending on the program you were enrolled in with ILAC.

• In-Person English Classes – Students Currently in Canada

According to the information shared during the live stream, Languages Canada is coordinating the reassignment of students.

To find out which route applies to your situation, you can contact the following directly:

If you are currently in Canada participating in an in-person program, it is important to follow the instructions provided by the relevant authorities before making any changes at your educational institution.

• In-person English – Future course already paid for or student who has not yet traveled

If you had paid for an in-person English course that had not yet started or had not yet traveled to Canada, we recommend contacting both Languages Canada and the trustee to find out what options are available based on your situation.

Important

If you have a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) originally issued by ILAC, please check your status before traveling using that documentation. Changes resulting from the closure of an institution may require new guidance or documentation.

• ILAC KISS – English Online

For students taking ILAC KISS English Online, the information shared during the Live session indicates that OHLA is accepting students.

If your course was scheduled to begin in the future or had not yet started, we recommend that you confirm your eligibility, the remaining balance, and the terms of any potential transition directly with the institution before accepting a new option.

• ILAC KISS – French Online

For students of ILAC KISS French Online, the information shared indicates that the language school ATPAL LANGUAGES is accepting students.

To facilitate the review of your case, it is recommended that you have the following documents available:

• LOA or LOC.
• Proof of payment.
• Payment Status.
• Current level of French.
• Contact information associated with your registration.

• High School

Students currently in Toronto

If you are currently attending high school in Toronto, we recommend that you check directly with the host institutions designated by Ontario to confirm the availability and conditions for a possible credit transfer.

Students who have already paid for a future course

If your course hadn't started yet and you had already made a payment, you can contact:

Important

If you were planning to travel to Canada using an LOA issued by ILAC, please verify your admission and the relevant documentation before traveling.

• Career College – Toronto, Ontario

For Career College students located in Toronto or other areas of Ontario, the steps outlined during the Live session include contacting TCAF/Ontario to obtain information regarding training completion and academic records.

• Co-op Students

If you were enrolled in a program with a Co-opprogram, it’s important not to assume that you can continue working just because your Co-op work permit is still valid.

The situation may depend on the specific circumstances of the program and the guidance provided by the relevant authorities. Therefore, it is recommended that you wait and verify the official information before making any work-related decisions.

• Career College – Vancouver, British Columbia

For students at Career College in Vancouver or British Columbia, we recommend contacting PTIRU for guidance on tuition protection and possible train-out.

• If you paid for a course in advance 

If you made payments for a program that had not yet begun, in addition to following the provincial procedure that applies to your situation, it is important to keep all payment receipts and documentation related to your registration.

Documents You Should Keep

In a situation like this, keeping the documentation related to your studies can be very important.

We recommend that you keep copies of the following in a safe place:

• LOA or LOC.
• Student Contract.
• Tuition receipts and payment confirmations.
• Receipts for other payments made.
• Proof of housing, if applicable.

• Study Permit.

• Work Permit or Co-op Work Permit, if applicable.

• Transcripts.

• Letters related to Co-op.
• Proof of academic or practical hours already completed.
• Emails and communications received from ILAC.

Do not delete any emails or documents related to your academic progress.
