Immigrant French: Canada's "favorite" language

Jul 17, 2026

If you are one of the many French-speaking Latinos who live in or want to live in Canada, you should know why French is the government’s “favorite” language.

Although it is spoken by a smaller percentage of the population than English, it plays an immensely important role in preserving the cultural identity of French-speaking provinces, such as Quebec, and in facilitating immigration processes in the rest of the country.

In this blog post, I'll explain why French is Canada's official language and how speaking it will help you with your immigration process.

The favorite that everyone looks after (and demands)

The federal government and the province of Quebec cherish and protect the French language as a treasure.

It is quite surprising to learn that Quebec regulations strictly require that outdoor commercial signs for stores be in French, a requirement that even extends to the social media accounts of companies from Latin America, the English-speaking world, or anywhere else in the world.

It's only logical and fair: if you're in Quebec, you should at least adopt the official language of this beautiful province, which welcomes with open arms anyone who embraces its culture.

Here, I'll tell you about the benefits of being a French speaker.

Canadian Immigration through Mobilité Francophone (CLB 5)

French can help you extend your temporary stay

If you're in Canada and your work permit is about to expire and you don't qualify under a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), French can help you!

How? By achieving a CLB 5 level to qualify for the LMIA exemption.

You must achieve this level in all four sections of the exam (TEF/TCF) to have your permit validated.

If you already speak it—even just a little—and have managed to get by with your current level, putting in more effort will help you, even if it seems like a huge challenge at first.

CLB 5 is an intermediate level that is very useful in conversational settings.

Make sure you can read and write it correctly to meet the government's official requirement… Et voilà!

This level opens the door to a work permit and makes the process much easier for you.

The exception of the French-speaking province

The Mobilité Francophone CLB 5 applies to all provinces except Quebec.

It's interesting, but a candidate with a CLB 5 score can obtain a work permit in Canada without an LMIA, except in the country's officially French-speaking province.

Why is this happening? The provincial government requires high levels of French precisely to preserve its cultural identity. A CLB 5 level falls short of this goal.

If you want to live in Quebec, you need to advance to the next level. You can do this by enrolling in programs tailored to your specific goals.

Express Entry or Direct Entry to Canada

Apply for permanent residency through the direct route

For permanent residency through Express Entry, the French language requirement works differently than under the Mobilité Francophone program.

The required level here is much higher.

Given the current Express Entry scores, the minimum level is CLB 7, which benefits advanced users, especially through the Francophone Category (selection by category).

In this case, Level 7 must be reflected in all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading.

If you achieve this score, you'll be closer to being selected in the direct lotteries for permanent residency.

Tips for Making the Most of Your French Skills

Depending on your immigration goal, you should focus more on laying this groundwork:

  • Start with CEFR Level 5: For the Mobilité Francophone program, focus on developing discussion skills and expressing your opinions. Learn to read and write simple texts, such as informal emails. If you have a job offer and can demonstrate this level, you can apply to the program.
  • Keep going until you reach CEFR Level 7: Never stop improving your French in Canada. Remember that the higher your proficiency level, the better your chances of obtaining permanent residence through direct selection pathways.
  • Strategy for Couples: If you’re an international student and you’re worried about your partner’s legal status while you’re applying for your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), French is your ace in the hole.

With a level of CLB 5 (and the other basic requirements), she can begin the application process for the Mobilité Francophone

Learning French is definitely the key to living in Canada.
