Ana is a communications graduate from Colombia who is now thriving in Canada thanks to the boost she got from learning French. 

As soon as he arrived in Toronto, he moved in with some relatives in the area around Carlton Street and Parliament Street, near the historic Sacré-Cœur Church.

Even though Toronto is mostly English-speaking, there are specific areas where French is spoken, especially near this church, where Ana has been going on weekends for the past three years.

There he began to hear the priest and the parishioners speak in French in a slow, warm, and familiar way. From passive listening, he moved on to actively responding to the rhythm of phrases such as: “Le Seigneur soit avec vous,” and the collective response: “Et avec votre esprit.” 

Since then, Ana has started to speak French automatically and decided that this would be the language of her certificate program.

Ana's leap to the B2+ level

"Hello. My name is Ana, and I've been living in Canada for three years. I decided to learn French to improve my career prospects and integrate better. Although learning requires discipline, I’m seeing steady progress thanks to daily practice.

I live near the intersection of Carlton and Parliament Streets, just a stone's throw from the magnificent Sacré-Cœur Church. Every weekend, attending this parish allows me to practice French within the community. 

"In addition, earning my certificate in digital media and communication at the Université de l'Ontario français allowed me to complete a rewarding internship. Thanks to this experience, I recently landed a permanent position at a French-language television station in Toronto."

What the text is about

In this text, Ana confirms that learning a language requires discipline (“although learning requires discipline”) and emphasizes that she is making steady progress thanks to her daily practice (“I’m seeing steady progress thanks to daily practice”). 

Ana mentions the streets where she lives and connects them to the church where she has been practicing French every weekend. She says that after earning her certificate and completing her internship, she was able to find a job in a French-speaking position.

Where does precision come from?

A reading at B2 level (upper-intermediate) is characterized by going beyond the simple conveyance of facts or basic narratives. At this level, the text reflects precision, intent, and grammatical nuances. 

Unlike the B1 level, the structure of the B2 level requires complete mastery of meaning and advanced grammar.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) defines level B2 by semantic precision (the ability to choose the exact word for a specific context).

Key Differences Between Levels B1 and B2

• Replacement of objectives: Whereas in B1, "pour" (for), in B2, "afin de"is used—a more formal and precise structure, ideal for business settings.
• Advanced connectors: It changed from "même si" (even though) to "bien que", which introduces more complex structures that require a higher level of grammatical proficiency.
• Results Vocabulary: People are no longer just talking about “making an effort,” but about "constant progress" (constant progress) and "pratique quotidienne" (daily practice).

Average Reading and Paraphrasing Time by Level

A true indicator of one's level of French is not just "understanding," but the time it takes to process the text:

• At the B1 level: The average reading time is 20–25 seconds, and it may still be necessary to translate mentally.
• At the B2 level: Reading time is less than 10 seconds; intonation is natural, and the text can be paraphrased immediately.

B2-Level Vocabulary

These words stand out in the passage because they are specific and demonstrate a more refined vocabulary:

• In order to: (Purpose connector). In order to / So as to.
• Although: (Concessive connector). Even though / Although (formal).
• Note: (Verb of perception/analysis). To notice / To perceive.
• Daily: (Adjective of frequency). Daily / Every day.
• To integrate: (Reflexive process verb). To integrate.

Based on the passage, try to write a different sentence using "Afin de". 

You reach Level B2 when you stop being a passive reader and become a creator of purposeful messages.
