Written by Gabriela Estrada

With the arrival of Earth Day, there is a growing opportunity to appreciate the environment and expand our English language skills. At Planet Immiland, not only are we passionate about teaching how to speak the official languages of Canada (English and French), but we also join the group of nature lovers who celebrate April 22nd as a special time to celebrate Earth Day.

Today we dedicate our blog to ecological vocabulary in English to talk about the importance and necessity of taking care of our planet earth. Read with me to the end and discover the words, phrases and themes that are most used to celebrate this important date. Let's get started!

Strategies for demonstrating English proficiency on Earth Day

With the ecological vocabulary learned (sustainability, recycling, carbon footprint, etc.), bring to oral or written production a short message related to the environment. For example: "Reuse your water bottles to reduce plastic waste".

  • Post a short message on social networks

  • Check spelling.
  • Practice saying the message aloud, paying attention to pronunciation (use an online dictionary to hear the correct pronunciation).
  • Record the message. Then listen and evaluate fluency, pauses and intonation. Variant for advanced levelsAdd relevant facts or figures, such as "The average person produces 4.4 pounds of trash per day".
  • Don't forget to write tags with the appropriate green vocabulary, such as. #EarthDay #GoGreen."

  • Simulate an environmental interview at home

  • Write basic questions and answers.
  • Practice both parties (interviewer-interviewee) to work on vocabulary and pronunciation.
  • Record the interview.
  • At the end, check if your answers are clear, coherent and appropriate to the context.
  • Extra tip: practice with different tones to sound more natural and dynamic.

These activities will not only help you improve your English, but also help you develop useful communication skills.
