How to complement the French class outside the classroom?
The perfect complement to speaking French after class is constant exposure to the language. This is its fundamental pillar.
The key to making progress in a language is daily daily exposure. It's not about forcing learning, but about getting your brain used to the sounds and structures of the language. Here are five elements to incorporate into your daily life if you want to become fluent in French:
- Music: start with the basics. Singers like Charles Aznavour , Édith Piaf y Jacques Brel are classics that easily familiarize you with French in a calm and melodic way. If you prefer something more modern and up-tempo, explore Afro-Francophone music. Afro-Francophone music; Angèle (from Belgium) is an excellent recommendation - make French music the new soundtrack of our lives!
- Series and movies: Netflix and other platforms are a treasured gem for learning a second language. In particular, I recommend series such as "Lupin in French, as they are very didactic to get started, but, of course, as indicated by our teachers, with subtitles in your mother tongue (Spanish)because the initial objective is to get your ear used to the sounds. Once you feel more comfortable and acquire vocabulary, you can move on to French subtitles and, finally, watch them without them. There are no forces in the process; you should always go at your own pace.
For expand your lexicon and gain confidencethe best advice is to read and talk. So, incorporate these elements:
- Adapted books: Amazon offers books in French adapted to different levels (from A1 to B2). Some even come in bilingual versions (French-Spanish or French-English), allowing you to look up the meaning of unfamiliar words in your native language. Reading French children's books with your children is also an excellent strategy for developing vocabulary naturally.
- Language exchange platforms: if direct interaction is difficult for you, try online platforms. There are applications such as Omegle (we recommend handling it with caution, as it is more open and you should be careful with your interlocutors) or Tandem. These platforms connect you with native speakers who want to learn your language while you practice your French. Tandem, for example, is more structured, with users actively seeking language exchanges and where they can even correct you.
There are other official resources and they are strategic to obtain even better complementary results. For example:
- TV5 Monde: the French government offers the website TV5Monde as a didactic resource, in whose section "Apprendre le français (Learning French), you will find a free study package called "Premières Classes".. This course is designed for migrants and covers essential vocabulary related to everyday life in a new city, travel, passport formalities, etc. Many students find it perfect to complement their classes and see their progress.
