How can you tell if an English Pathway program is right for you?

A simple example to help guide you through studying in Canada

Written by Ana MarĂa Valero RamĂrez

Many Latino students with limited English proficiency are looking for a pathway that will facilitate admission to the institution of their dreams in Canada; however, not all of them choose the right option. They take the course and improve their language skills, but when it comes time to enroll, they realize that the school they chose does not have an official agreement.

To take advantage of the benefits of this program, it is not enough to simply reach the required CLB level on the scale: success depends largely on the information you have.

If you don't analyze your profile carefully, you may end up choosing the first available option in your rush to “move forward,” without evaluating whether the Pathway meets your needs.

But don't worry. It doesn't have to be this way!

As a student, you need to be absolutely clear about which academic program is right for you to pursue abroad, at which institution, and, above all, whether that institution has a direct partnership with Pathwaypartnership.

To help you figure out if this path is right for you, I invite you to read this blog post, where I share a simple example that will clear up any questions you may have.

MarĂa's Story and the Mistakes She Made When Choosing Her First Pathway

An easy way to find out if the program Pathway is a good fit for your educational background and second-language proficiency is to to consider it in the context of the degree program you want to pursue.

Example: María lives in Colombia and dreams of studying Business Administration in Canada.

She's excited about the trip and can't wait to start the leveling process (if she doesn't, she feels she'll lose her spot); then she makes the first common mistake:

  • He enrolls in the first English school that promises "a Pathway to Canada," without verifying whether that school has an agreement with the exact that offers his business program.

In addition, you make a second common mistake:

  • He assumes that whatever level he achieves will qualify him for direct admission, regardless of whether the curriculum meets the CLB level required by the college.

Finally, María comes to terms with reality:

  • The institution where I planned to study (such as the Royal Canadian Business Academy) not only lacks a Pathway agreement with its English language school, but it is not even registered as a DLI (Designated Learning Institution) and does not allow students to apply for an official study permit.

Realizing that he had invested time and money blindly, he pauses and, before making a third, even more costly mistake, he decides to seek expert advice from a member of our team.

Program Advisory Services Pathway Program from Planeta Immiland Education

Your process with us can be summarized in six steps:

  1. During the consultation, MarĂa will help you identify the college that best suits your goals.
  2. Find out what the institution is Loyalist College, which accepts our Pathway program.
  3. Submit your academic application.
  4. Receive a conditional admission letter based on language proficiency.
  5. Start your Pathway from Colombia.
  6. Upon completing the required level, you will have met the language requirement and can continue with the admission process to begin your studies in Canada.

MarĂa is no longer just interested in studying Business Administration in Canada to:

  • Knowing that the best college for her is Loyalist College because it has an agreement with the Pathwayprogram.
  • Understand that the institution you choose must be government-approved for international students.
  • Understand the value of the DLIs and the possibility of obtaining the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), in case you wish to work and settle in Canada afterward.

So MarĂa does not start the Pathway earlier; she does so after learning that her college has the agreement.

IMPORTANT! Taking this approach allows you to plan your educational project well in advance and make progress on various steps of the process while improving your English.

How to Understand Your Profile and Find the Pathway that’s right for you?

There are those who are just starting out at an English level of A1 and need a more extensive learning guide, while others start at a B1 and just need a final push.

Studying in Canada is also the experience of living in the place you've always imagined.

Your personality makes all the difference!

Some students are drawn to bustling cities like Vancouver, while others prefer the peace and quiet of a province like Prince Edward Island.

There are even those who dream of attending a specific institution so they can reconnect with old friends who already live in Canada, even though they don't yet know if that environment truly suits their actual circumstances and needs.

Your true profile comes from linking your current language proficiency to your personal interests, your academic goals, and the lifestyle of the city where you want to live.

Trying to handle all of this on your own could lead you to make costly mistakes due to a lack of knowledge.

A personalized consultation allows you to evaluate each of these aspects together to identify the right program Pathway that best fits your project.

Recommendations for Choosing the right that's right for you

Before making a decision about the Pathway, it is advisable to consider aspects such as:

  • Your current level of English. Find out your English level.
  • The program you want to study.
  • The college or university you're interested in.
  • Specific admission requirements.
  • The time frames available for starting your project.
