"C’est" or "Il est"? The Common Confusion in French and How to Overcome It
Oct 07, 2026
If you're one of those French students who isn't sure whether to use “c’est” or “il est”, don’t worry: you just need a little nudge to keep moving forward.
In fact, this is one of the most common questions asked in our classes.
That's why today we're going to share with you the ultimate key to mastering this difference and taking a real leap forward in your language skills.
It all comes down to understanding its structure through a simple and precise rule. Once you apply it, you’ll immediately notice the difference; native speakers in France, Quebec, and other French-speaking regions will understand you perfectly, and you’ll feel much more confident when speaking.
Read to the end and discover the secret.
When is “C’est”?
It is used "c’est" is used when the verb is followed by a noun—especially if the noun is preceded by an article (un, une, le, la, des, du, etc.) or a possessive or demonstrative determiner.
- Structure: It is + article / determiner + noun
- Examples:
- It is a friend. (He's a friend.)
- It is a teacher. (He is a teacher.)
- It is my book. (It’s my book.)
When is it used? “Il est” / “Elle est”?
It is used il est (for masculine) or elle est (for feminine) when referring directly to an adjective or a profession/occupation that does not requires an article.
- Structure: He / She is + adjective / profession without an article.
- Examples:
- She is a professor. (She is a teacher.)
- He is a doctor. (He is a doctor.)
- It is big. (He is tall.)
"It's big" - "It's big"
To say "C'est grand" refers to an impression of a situation (“It’s big / It’s great”) and the adjective is always used in its masculine form, whereas "Il est grand" directly describes a specific male subject (“He is tall”).
For a native speaker, this isn't just a minor detail—it's the difference between a vague sentence, a good command of the language, and a meaningful message.
French in a Francophone Environment: A Window into Unique Experiences
Speaking French well allows you to connect authentically with people in first-world countries that can offer professional and immigration opportunities.
France, Canada, Switzerland, and many regions of Europe are the dream destinations for Latin American students and professionals who want to have an unforgettable experience. In particular, Hispanic Americans learn French to increase their chances of pursuing a career abroad or finding well-paying jobs with international opportunities.
Canada is one of the most sought-after countries due to its geographical proximity. Provinces with French-speaking communities, such as Ontario, offer charming environments and tremendous potential for professional growth. In addition, the federal government has immigration programs available to foreign nationals who speak French at a minimum CLB 7 level.
The higher the level, the greater the chance of being invited by the government through its direct entry system—Express Entry—which awards points for speaking French and has specific pathways to apply for permanent residence, except in Quebec.
